NEA has established a Committee on Radiological Protection and Public Health (CRPPH), made up of regulators and radiation protection experts, with the broad mission to assist NEA member countries in the implementation and enhancement of radiological protection systems by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>providing a high-level, visible forum for exchange and discussion<\/li>\n<li>seeking common understanding of identified issues<\/li>\n<li>advancing state-of-the-art radiological protection theory and practice<\/li>\n<li>advancing policies that bring radiological protection systems more in line with modern societal needs<\/li>\n<li>promoting international cooperative projects<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>CRPPH has a number of working parties and expert groups that support its work. Their mandates span nuclear and radiological emergency matters, legacy management, operational and analytical aspects of exposures at nuclear power plants, and implications of international recommendations on the system of radiological protection.<\/p>\n<p>CRPPH works in close cooperation with other NEA committees, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oecd-nea.org\/rwm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Radioactive Waste Management Committee<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oecd-nea.org\/nsd\/cnra\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Committee on Nuclear Regulatory Activities<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oecd-nea.org\/nsd\/csni\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Committee on the Safety of Nuclear Installations<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Brian Ahier, director of the Radiation Protection Bureau of Health Canada, and Christina Dodkin, radiation protection specialist with the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, represent Canada on CRPPH.<\/p>\n<h1>Overview of the 76<sup>th<\/sup> Meeting of CRPPH<\/h1>\n<p>CRPPH held its 76<sup>th<\/sup> annual meeting from April 10 to 12, 2018, in Paris, France, to review its ongoing work and discuss future directions. Observers at the meeting included representatives from:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iaea.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.icrp.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.irpa.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">International Radiation Protection Association (IRPA)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unscear.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UN Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">World Health Organization (WHO)<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At the meeting, CRPPH approved five reports in the following areas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Food safety<\/li>\n<li>NEA International Nuclear Emergency Exercise (INEX-5)<\/li>\n<li>Legacy management<\/li>\n<li>Lessons learned from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It also agreed to create two new expert groups:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Recovery management following a nuclear or radiological emergency<\/li>\n<li>Implementing the ICRP\u2019s recommended equivalent dose limit for the lens of the eye for occupational exposures<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Other highlights from the meeting include the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The status of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oecd-nea.org\/rp\/irps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NEA International Radiological Protection School<\/a>, an activity of the CRPPH, was discussed. The pilot will take place August 20 to 24, 2018, at Stockholm University in Sweden.<\/li>\n<li>CRPPH strongly supported an initiative for global coordination of low-dose radiation research.<\/li>\n<li>A topical session on radiation risk communication at the meeting prompted CRPPH to include this topic in its future program of work. Her experiences range from the regulation of large nuclear facilities to small-scale nuclear substance licensees.
