{"id":1389,"date":"2019-02-26T20:36:13","date_gmt":"2019-02-27T02:36:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.crpa-acrp-bulletin.ca\/?p=1389"},"modified":"2020-02-18T20:13:20","modified_gmt":"2020-02-19T02:13:20","slug":"editorial-editorial-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.crpa-acrp-bulletin.ca\/fr\/2019\/02\/26\/editorial-editorial-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Editorial \/ \u00c9ditorial"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class='content-column one_half'><div style=\"padding-right:10px;\"><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-664\" src=\"https:\/\/www.crpa-acrp-bulletin.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/daveniven.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" \/>Welcome to 2019 and our first issue of the CRPA <em>Bulletin<\/em> for this year. As one might expect in February, many parts of the country have been blanketed by piles of snow and are bracing themselves against cold temperatures. Here in Toronto we set a new record for snowfall at the end of January. This is just one reason why I\u2019ll be heading south to the Health Physics Society (HPS) Midyear Meeting in San Diego, CA, this month\u2014to get a brief respite from the cold. Among the other reasons is professional development. (Of course, if my employer is reading this, professional development is the first and foremost reason!) I\u2019ve also planned a more informal mission\u2014to remind our southern neighbours just how great our Canadian conferences are.<\/p>\n<p>The CRPA conference, to be held May 27\u201330, 2019, in Ottawa, will be happening before we know it; the early bird registration deadline has in fact already passed. In addition to the Americans I successfully recruit at the HPS meeting, I hope to see many existing CRPA members and a slew of new faces. If you\u2019ve never been to a CRPA conference, your new year\u2019s resolution should be to come to Ottawa in May. I guarantee you won\u2019t be disappointed.<\/p>\n<p>On the subject of conferences, I know convincing an employer that attending a conference provides value to their organization can be a major challenge. When employers are under fiscal restraint, as many have been for years now, a potential attendee has to present a strong case. From what I\u2019ve seen, the program for the 2019 CRPA conference certainly makes a compelling argument.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes a strong program is not enough. Networking is also a significant benefit of attending conferences. Unfortunately it\u2019s a somewhat intangible benefit that employers can be quick to dismiss. In my experience, networking at conferences\u2014and being a member of CRPA\u2014has provided me with a huge list of contacts. Having that network of contacts makes it easier to find answers when I need them or simply to seek out best practices in a specific area. Those contacts have also provided a sounding board for new ideas, which has been a huge advantage when I was searching out different employment opportunities. Beyond conferences, the benefits of networking have continued to scale up as I have become more involved with CRPA. It would not be easy to quantify the value of networking, but doing so would certainly benefit our association and other professional groups.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s worth reminding CRPA members that the new year also brings association-related duties and opportunities. The deadline for nominations for our four <a href=\"http:\/\/crpa-acrp.org\/home\/?page_id=5218\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CRPA awards <\/a>is March 23, 2019. Awards are far more exciting (but no more important!) than renewing your membership, which the association has undoubtedly been reminding you to do. Nominations for positions on the 2019\u20132020 Board of Directors (yes, we\u2019re almost at 2020!) are now closed, which means elections will be coming up shortly, so watch your email for voting instructions.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, it was very sad to hear about the passing of Stuart Hunt, a founding member of the association whose company, Stuart Hunt &amp; Associates, has been a long-standing supporter of the association. Although I only met Stuart a handful of times, his name has become embedded in the practice of radiation protection in Canada. He will be missed.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<div class='content-column one_half last_column'><div style=\"padding-left:10px;\"><div style=\"padding: 0 0 0 20px; border-left: #dddddd 1px solid;\">\n<p>Bienvenue en 2019 et \u00e0 notre tout premier num\u00e9ro du <em>Bulletin<\/em> de l\u2019ACRP pour cette nouvelle ann\u00e9e. Comme nous pouvions nous y attendre, plusieurs r\u00e9gions du pays ont \u00e9t\u00e9 recouvertes de neige en f\u00e9vrier et ont d\u00fb affronter un froid glacial. Juste ici \u00e0 Toronto, nous avons \u00e9tabli un record de chute de neige en janvier. Afin d\u2019avoir un court r\u00e9pit de tout ce froid, je me dirigerai vers le sud en f\u00e9vrier, pour la rencontre semestrielle de la Health Physics Society (HPS), \u00e0 San Diego, en Californie. Outre \u00e9chapper au froid canadien, le perfectionnement professionnel est la deuxi\u00e8me raison pour laquelle je participe \u00e0 cette rencontre (bien entendu, si mon employeur lit ceci, c\u2019est le perfectionnement professionnel qui constitue le but premier de ce voyage)! J\u2019ai \u00e9galement une mission informelle\u00a0\u00e0 accomplir : celle de rappeler \u00e0 nos voisins du sud combien formidables sont nos congr\u00e8s canadiens.<\/p>\n<p>Par exemple, le congr\u00e8s de l\u2019ACRP, qui se tiendra \u00e0 Ottawa du 27 au 30 mai 2019, arrive \u00e0 grands pas, comme en fait foi la date limite pour inscription h\u00e2tive, qui est d\u00e9j\u00e0 \u00e9chue. En plus des Am\u00e9ricains que je vais recruter \u00e0 la r\u00e9union de la HPS, j\u2019esp\u00e8re aussi y voir de nombreux membres actuels de l\u2019ACRP et une multitude de nouveaux visages. Si vous n\u2019avez jamais particip\u00e9 \u00e0 un congr\u00e8s de l\u2019ACRP, votre r\u00e9solution du Nouvel An devrait \u00eatre de participer au congr\u00e8s de mai, \u00e0 Ottawa. Je vous garantis que vous ne serez pas d\u00e9\u00e7us.<\/p>\n<p>En ce qui concerne les congr\u00e8s, je sais que de convaincre un employeur qu\u2019une participation \u00e0 un congr\u00e8s est une valeur ajout\u00e9e pour son organisation peut repr\u00e9senter un d\u00e9fi majeur. Lorsque les employeurs sont soumis \u00e0 des restrictions budg\u00e9taires, comme beaucoup le sont depuis des ann\u00e9es, un participant potentiel doit pr\u00e9senter un argument solide. De ce que j\u2019ai constat\u00e9, le programme pour le congr\u00e8s\u00a02019 de l\u2019ACRP constitue un argument convaincant.<\/p>\n<p>Parfois, un programme solide ne suffit pas. Le r\u00e9seautage est \u00e9galement un avantage important \u00e0 la participation aux congr\u00e8s. Malheureusement, il s\u2019agit aussi d\u2019un avantage intangible qu\u2019un employeur peut facilement rejeter. Selon mon exp\u00e9rience, le r\u00e9seautage lors de congr\u00e8s et mon adh\u00e9sion \u00e0 l\u2019ACRP m\u2019ont permis de cr\u00e9er une longue liste de personnes-ressources. Disposer d\u2019un tel r\u00e9seau fait en sorte qu\u2019il m\u2019est plus facile de trouver les r\u00e9ponses que je cherche, ou simplement d\u2019obtenir les meilleures pratiques dans un domaine sp\u00e9cifique. Ces personnes-ressources m\u2019ont \u00e9galement fourni une r\u00e9troaction pour de nouvelles id\u00e9es, un \u00e9norme avantage pour moi lorsque je recherchais diff\u00e9rentes possibilit\u00e9s d\u2019emploi. Au-del\u00e0 du congr\u00e8s, les avantages du r\u00e9seautage ont continu\u00e9 \u00e0 se d\u00e9velopper au fur et \u00e0 mesure de mon engagement aupr\u00e8s de l\u2019ACRP. Il ne serait pas facile de quantifier la valeur du r\u00e9seautage, mais le faire b\u00e9n\u00e9ficierait certainement \u00e0 notre association ainsi qu\u2019\u00e0 d\u2019autres groupes professionnels.<\/p>\n<p>Il convient de rappeler aux membres de l\u2019ACRP que la nouvelle ann\u00e9e apporte \u00e9galement des t\u00e2ches et des possibilit\u00e9s li\u00e9es \u00e0 l\u2019association. L\u2019\u00e9ch\u00e9ance de la mise en candidature aux quatre <a href=\"http:\/\/crpa-acrp.org\/home\/?page_id=5725&amp;lang=fr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">prix de l\u2019ACRP<\/a> est le 23 mars 2019. Les prix sont beaucoup plus captivants (mais pas plus importants!) que le renouvellement de votre adh\u00e9sion, ce que l\u2019association vous a sans doute rappel\u00e9. La p\u00e9riode de mise en candidature pour les postes du Conseil d\u2019administration\u00a02019-2020 (oui, nous sommes presque en 2020!) est maintenant termin\u00e9e, ce qui veut dire que les \u00e9lections auront lieu bient\u00f4t. Surveillez vos courriels pour les instructions de vote.<\/p>\n<p>Pour terminer, le d\u00e9c\u00e8s de Stuart Hunt, membre fondateur de l\u2019ACRP dont l\u2019entreprise Stuart Hunt &amp; Associates soutient l\u2019association depuis longtemps, nous attriste beaucoup.
