Ilson Leadership Award<\/a><\/p>\n<h1 id=\"osborne_en\">Richard V. Osborne Founders\u2019 Award<\/h1>\n<p>The recipient of the 2019 Richard V. Osborne Founders\u2019 Award was Dr. Jing Chen, Radiation Protection Bureau, Health Canada.<\/p>\n<p>The award honours CRPA\u2019s first Founders\u2019 Award recipient, our founding president, Dr. Richard V. Osborne. It recognizes outstanding contributions that enhance the reputation of the association and raise its profile as an important organization in radiation protection, or promote the benefits of membership in the association and encourage participation in association activities.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Chen is a member of CRPA\u2019s International Liaison Committee. The committee\u2019s mandate is to promote CRPA internationally and to create or maintain liaisons with foreign and international organizations with goals or objectives similar to CRPA. Her many contributions to the following organizations have enhanced CRPA\u2019s reputation nationally and internationally.<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, Dr. Chen has fostered collaborations between CRPA and several national or international organizations, such as the Canadian Association of Radon Scientists and Technologists (CARST), Federal Provincial Territorial Radiation Protection Committee (FPTRPC), and Chinese Society of Radiation Protection (CSRP). She has represented Canada on committees or working groups of the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR), Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), and World Health Organization (WHO).<\/p>\n<p>She worked on the Canadian Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORM) Working Group of FPTRPC, the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) Expert Group on Radiological Protection Science (EGRPS), and the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme (AMAP) working group assessment of radioactivity in the Arctic. She was one of the experts who contributed to the development of WHO\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.who.int\/iris\/bitstream\/handle\/10665\/272995\/9789241513746-eng.pdf?ua=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Management of Radioactivity in Drinking-Water<\/em><\/a>. Dr. Chen joined the Canadian delegation to UNSCEAR in 2011, was an alternate representative from 2014 to 2017, and has been the Canadian representative since 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Chen is a consulting editor of radiation protection dosimetry and a member of the editorial board of the <em>Radiation and Environmental Biophysics<\/em> journal and an international associate editor of the <em>Radiation Environment and Medicine<\/em> journal.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Chen has been a research scientist with Health Canada since 2001. Prior to that, she worked in the Institute of Radiation Biology at the GSF-National Research Center for Environment and Health in Germany; the Environment, Safety, and Health Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory in the United States; and Bubble Technology Industries Inc., Chalk River, Canada. She has published 180 scientific papers and has received a number of awards, including the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal from the Governor General of Canada in 2012.<\/p>\n<h1 id=\"distinguished_achievement\">Distinguished Achievement Award<\/h1>\n<p>The recipient of the 2019 Distinguished Achievement Award was Dr. Tony Waker, professor, Faculty of Energy Systems and Nuclear Science, University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT).<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Waker is also the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) \/ University Network of Excellence in Nuclear Engineering (UNENE) Industrial Research Chair in Health Physics and Environmental Safety at UOIT.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to joining UOIT, he was a senior scientist and manager in radiation biology and health physics at the Chalk River Laboratories of Atomic Energy of Canada Limited.<\/p>\n<p>The Distinguished Achievement Award is presented for outstanding contributions in the field of radiation protection. Recipients must have received recognition from peers, either nationally or internationally, for major accomplishments or significant contributions to the knowledge, practice, or advancement of the radiation protection profession.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Waker has earned worldwide recognition for his work on experimental radiation measurement techniques and its application in neutron therapy (microdosimetry), which deals with the measurement of charged particle energy deposition in tissue equivalent volumes ranging in size from nanometres to micrometres. Microdosimetry is employed to improve our understanding of the relationship between radiation energy deposition, the resulting biological effects, and the appropriate quantities to be used in characterizing and quantifying radiation quality.<\/p>\n<p>His research also focuses on measurement and quantification of radiation quality for cellular, subcellular, and molecular systems for high linear energy transfer (LET) radiation and low-energy X-rays and beta particles; neutron activation analysis and neutron monitoring; and radiation detector development for radiation protection dosimetry.<\/p>\n<p>He has served on both national and international committees concerning radiation measurement and effects. In 2015, Dr. Waker was recognized for his teaching efforts when he received the Canadian Nuclear Society Education and Communication Award for \u201csignificant efforts in improving the understanding of nuclear science and technology among educators, students, and the public.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Waker recently published a technical book, <em>Microdosimetry: Experimental Methods and Applications<\/em>, intended for use in medical, radiation, and health physics courses. He is also a long-time CRPA supporter. Not only does he attend the annual CRPA conferences, he also sends health physics students to the conferences to share their research applications with the radiation protection community.<\/p>\n<p>He has a BSc in applied physics from London South Bank University, United Kingdom, and a PhD in radiation physics from London South Bank University, United Kingdom, and the Joint Research Centre in Ispra, Italy.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h1 id=\"meritorious_service\">Meritorious Service Award<\/h1>\n<p>The recipient of the 2019 Meritorious Service Award was Joe Cortese, radiation safety officer,\u00a0British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT).<\/p>\n<p>The award recognizes significant services provided either to the association or to the radiation protection community in general.<\/p>\n<p>Cortese is a long-standing member of CRPA, whose attitude of \u201cwe can make this work\u201d has led him to join multiple CRPA committees at the same time. Not only is he the current chair of the Nominations Committee (with the frustrating job of finding candidates for election year after year), he also serves on the Professional Development Committee and the Membership Committee.<\/p>\n<p>Cortese was also the chair of the Local Organizing Committee for the 2014 CRPA conference in Vancouver and is currently contributing to the joint International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) \/ Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) \/ CRPA conference, to be held in Vancouver in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>He has a BSc in physics from the University of British Columbia and a diploma in nuclear medical technology from BCIT. Cortese achieved his CRPA(R) status in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to his responsibilities at BCIT, Cortese is a nationally recognized, well-respected radiation safety trainer and a private consultant who travels across Canada talking about radiation safety.<\/p>\n<h1 id=\"ilson_en\">Raymond G. Ilson Leadership Award<\/h1>\n<p>The recipient of the 2019 Raymond G. Ilson Leadership Award was Ali Shoushtarian.<\/p>\n<p>The award honours CRPA Founders\u2019 Award recipient and past president Raymond G. Ilson. It is presented to a CRPA member who has demonstrated or shows promise of leadership and has made a significant contribution to the radiation protection profession.<\/p>\n<p>Shoushtarian, as a forward-thinking and active member of the CRPA board of directors, has demonstrated leadership in the radiation protection profession and in the association. He leverages his large network to create partnerships to advance CRPA\u2019s mission. Here are some examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Inviting Grade 6 students to the 2019 CRPA conference as part of a new outreach session \u2014 Science Day at the CRPA!<\/li>\n<li>Creating a partnership with the Canadian Association of Radon Scientists and Technologists to strengthen education.<\/li>\n<li>Contributing to the success of the Ottawa Hospital Radiation Safety Program through innovation and best practices (e.g., leading the implementation of the radon awareness and measurement program and creating a monthly compliance report).<\/li>\n<li>Developing a new program in the interest of radiation protection of the public and workers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As part-time editor of the International Radiation Protection Association (IRPA) <em>Bulletin<\/em>, he encourages CRPA members to get involved with the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) and IRPA activities.<\/p>\n<p>Shoushtarian obtained an Honours BSc in biochemistry from the University of Ottawa and a graduate certificate in forensic science from Mount Royal University. His knowledge of radiation management has been acquired through years of experience as a user in a research environment and his later transition into the professional realm of radiation safety.<\/p>\n<p>He spent six years as the radiation safety officer at the University of Ottawa overseeing operational procedures of approximately 50 research laboratories. Currently, he is a senior radiation safety specialist with the Ottawa Hospital; his portfolio includes monitoring the radiation safety of the departments of clinical nuclear medicine and the hospital&rsquo;s research laboratories.<\/p>\n<p>The beginning of his relationship with CRPA in 2006 coincided with his entry into the field of radiation safety. Over the years, he has brought value to the organization through networking and information sharing. For example, he was a key member of the Local Organizing Committee for the 2011 CRPA conference in Ottawa and co-chair of the committee for the 2019 conference in Ottawa. As a member of the board of directors (2014\u20132018), he was instrumental in revamping the corporate membership structure of CRPA.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<div class='content-column one_half last_column'><div style=\"padding-left:10px;\"><div style=\"padding: 0 0 0 20px; border-left: #dddddd 1px solid;\">\n<p><a href=\"#osborne_fr\">\u00bb Prix des fondateurs comm\u00e9moratif Richard V. Elle a repr\u00e9sent\u00e9 le Canada au sein de comit\u00e9s ou de groupes de travail du Comit\u00e9 scientifique des Nations Unies pour l\u2019\u00e9tude des effets des rayonnements ionisants (UNSCEAR), de l\u2019Organisation de coop\u00e9ration et de d\u00e9veloppement \u00e9conomique (OCDE) et de l\u2019Organisation mondiale de la sant\u00e9 (OMS).<\/p>\n<p>Elle a travaill\u00e9 au sein du groupe de travail canadien sur les mati\u00e8res radioactives naturelles (MRN) du CRFPT, du groupe d\u2019experts sur les sciences de la radioprotection (EGRPS) de l\u2019Agence pour l\u2019\u00e9nergie nucl\u00e9aire (AEN) de l\u2019OCDE et sur le groupe de travail sur la surveillance de la radioactivit\u00e9 dans l\u2019Arctique du Programme de surveillance et d\u2019\u00e9valuation de l\u2019Arctique (PSEA). Les r\u00e9cipiendaires doivent \u00eatre reconnus par leurs pairs, \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle nationale ou internationale, pour leurs principales r\u00e9alisations ou leurs contributions significatives aux connaissances, \u00e0 la pratique ou \u00e0 l\u2019avancement de la profession en radioprotection.<\/p>\n<p>D<sup>r <\/sup>Waker s\u2019est m\u00e9rit\u00e9 une reconnaissance mondiale pour ses travaux sur les techniques exp\u00e9rimentales de mesure de rayonnements et leur application en th\u00e9rapie neutronique (microdosim\u00e9trie) qui traite de la mesure du d\u00e9p\u00f4t d\u2019\u00e9nergie de particules charg\u00e9es dans des volumes \u00e9quivalents aux tissus, allant du nanom\u00e8tre au microm\u00e8tre. La microdosim\u00e9trie est utilis\u00e9e pour am\u00e9liorer notre compr\u00e9hension de la relation entre le d\u00e9p\u00f4t d\u2019\u00e9nergie de rayonnement, les effets biologiques qui en r\u00e9sultent et les quantit\u00e9s appropri\u00e9es \u00e0 utiliser pour caract\u00e9riser et quantifier la qualit\u00e9 du rayonnement.<\/p>\n<p>Sa recherche porte \u00e9galement sur la mesure et la quantification de la qualit\u00e9 du rayonnement pour les syst\u00e8mes cellulaires, infracellulaires et mol\u00e9culaires pour le rayonnement \u00e0 transfert lin\u00e9ique d\u2019\u00e9nergie (TLE) \u00e9lev\u00e9, ainsi que pour les rayons X et particules b\u00eata \u00e0 faible \u00e9nergie, les analyses par activation neutronique, la surveillance neutronique et l\u2019\u00e9laboration d\u2019un d\u00e9tecteur de rayonnement pour la dosim\u00e9trie en radioprotection.<\/p>\n<p>Il a fait partie des comit\u00e9s nationaux et internationaux sur les mesures et les effets des rayonnements. En 2015, le travail p\u00e9dagogique du D<sup>r<\/sup> Waker a \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9compens\u00e9 par le Prix \u00e9ducation et communication de la Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 Nucl\u00e9aire Canadienne pour ses \u00ab\u00a0efforts importants afin d\u2019am\u00e9liorer la compr\u00e9hension de la science et de la technologie nucl\u00e9aires au sein des \u00e9ducateurs, des \u00e9tudiants et du public\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Waker a r\u00e9cemment publi\u00e9 l\u2019ouvrage technique intitul\u00e9 <em>Microdosimetry: Experimental Methods and Applications<\/em>, destin\u00e9 aux cours de m\u00e9decine, de rayonnements et de radioprotection. Ainsi, en plus de pr\u00e9sider le Comit\u00e9 de nominations (et donc de devoir trouver \u00e0 chaque ann\u00e9e des candidats aux \u00e9lections), il si\u00e8ge au Comit\u00e9 du perfectionnement professionnel et au Comit\u00e9 du recrutement.<\/p>\n<p>Cortese a \u00e9galement pr\u00e9sid\u00e9 le Comit\u00e9 organisateur local du congr\u00e8s de l\u2019ACRP\u00a02014 \u00e0 Vancouver et il contribue pr\u00e9sentement au congr\u00e8s conjoint de la Commission internationale de protection radiologique (CIPR), de la Commission canadienne de s\u00fbret\u00e9 nucl\u00e9aire (CCSN) et de l\u2019ACRP, qui se tiendra \u00e0 Vancouver en 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Il est titulaire d\u2019un baccalaur\u00e9at en physique de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de la Colombie-Britannique et d\u2019un dipl\u00f4me en technologie de m\u00e9decine nucl\u00e9aire du BCIT. Ses connaissances en gestion des rayonnements ont \u00e9t\u00e9 acquises au fil de ses ann\u00e9es d\u2019exp\u00e9rience en milieu de recherche et lors de sa plus r\u00e9cente transition professionnelle vers le domaine de la radioprotection.<\/p>\n<p>Il a \u00e9t\u00e9 responsable de la radioprotection pendant six ans \u00e0 l\u2019Universit\u00e9 d\u2019Ottawa, supervisant les proc\u00e9dures op\u00e9rationnelles d\u2019une cinquantaine de laboratoires de recherche. Il agit pr\u00e9sentement comme sp\u00e9cialiste principal en radioprotection \u00e0 l\u2019H\u00f4pital d\u2019Ottawa, o\u00f9 il g\u00e8re notamment la surveillance de la radioprotection dans les services de m\u00e9decine nucl\u00e9aire clinique et dans les laboratoires de recherche de l\u2019H\u00f4pital.<\/p>\n<p>Ses d\u00e9buts avec l\u2019ACRP en 2006 co\u00efncident avec son entr\u00e9e dans le domaine de la radioprotection.
