The Canadian delegation included scientists from Health Canada (Jing Chen and Ruth Wilkins), the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (Kiza Sauv\u00e9, Rachel Lane, and Julie Burtt), and Cancer Care Ontario (Paul Demers).<\/p>\n<p>The delegates, supported by numerous Canadian experts, reviewed and provided constructive comments on six draft publications:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Evaluation of Selected Health Effects and Inference of Risk due to Radiation Exposure<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Evaluation of Medical Exposures to Ionizing Radiation<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Evaluation of Occupational Exposures to Ionizing Radiation<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Lung Cancer from Exposure to Radon<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Biological Mechanisms Relevant for Influence of Cancer Risks from Low-Dose Radiation<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Levels and Effects of Radiation Exposure Due to the Accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station: Implications of Information Published Since the 2013 UNSCEAR Report<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>After much technical discussion and consideration, two documents were approved for publication:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Evaluation of Selected Health Effects and Inference of Risk due to Radiation Exposure<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Lung Cancer from Exposure to Radon<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Next year, at the 67<sup>th<\/sup> UNSCEAR meeting, the remaining four documents will go through another rigorous review with the goal of being approved for publication. Of interest\u2014once the committee reviews a first draft, it typically goes through several detailed reviews before being approved for publication.<\/p>\n<p>Delegates also approved the <em>Public Information and Outreach Strategy for 2020\u20132024<\/em>, prepared by the secretariat, and considered progress reports on the following topics:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Second primary cancer after radiotherapy<\/li>\n<li>Epidemiological studies of radiation and cancer<\/li>\n<li>Implementation of the committee\u2019s strategy to improve collection, analysis, and dissemination of data on radiation exposures<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Aside from the excellent document review and discussion, a major highlight from the meeting was the establishment of a new UNSCEAR bureau. The position of scientific secretary, which had been filled on an interim basis, was officially filled by Borislava Batandjieva-Metcalf (Bulgaria). Other officers of the committee were elected for the 66<sup>th<\/sup> and 67<sup>th<\/sup> sessions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The new chair is Gillian Hirth (Australia).<\/li>\n<li>The three vice-chairs selected were Jing Chen (Canada), Jin Kyung Lee (Republic of Korea), and Anna Friedl (Germany).<\/li>\n<li>The new rapporteur is Ingemar Lund (Sweden).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As a woman attending this meeting for the first time, I was impressed with the outstanding leadership and competencies demonstrated by the female officers of the committee. Recently, she completed an interchange in the radiation biology lab at Health Canada. In 2019, Julie represented Canada as a scientific advisor for the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR).<\/p>\n<p>Forte de plus de dix ans d\u2019exp\u00e9rience en radiobiologie, Julie Burtt est responsable de la science du rayonnement et de la sant\u00e9 pour la Commission canadienne de s\u00fbret\u00e9 nucl\u00e9aire.
