I\u2019m writing this at the beginning of August\u2014a little later than I had planned to write it, which often tends to be the case. (I apologize to the rest of the editorial team!)<\/p>\n

I find that I fall even more behind during the summer. I make vague promises to myself to finish CRPA work on weekends, then those promises tend to disappear completely when said weekends finally arrive. This is kind of ironic, given that I find myself being more productive at work during the week when everyone else is on holidays.<\/p>\n

So, I make vague promises every year . . . it\u2019s a very predictable cycle. It reminds me of one of my favourite television shows, the reimagined Battlestar Galactica<\/em>. The show often references an \u201ceternal recurrence,\u201d when characters say, \u201cAll of this has happened before, and all of this will happen again.\u201d<\/p>\n

While this concept easily explains my recurring summer slowdowns, it also comes up remarkably often in other settings. As an example, I see it play out at each CRPA annual general meeting. The most recent meeting in Ottawa in May was no exception.<\/p>\n

The AGM is fairly predictable . . . the same budgetary concerns, membership number concerns, etc. are presented every year. One difference this year was the motion put forth to reinstate the position of past president. The board proposed this because they felt that the position would benefit their work.<\/p>\n

The motion was eventually passed after a somewhat lively debate. However, even this was part of a cycle\u2014the position had been eliminated five years ago, and the proposal to bring it back was passed only with a caveat that it be reviewed again in two years. Will a final decision be made at that time, or will the discussion keep recurring?<\/p>\n

Perhaps the fate of the past president position will be easier to predict once the new CRPA strategic plan is in place. The current plan covered 2014 to 2019, which means we should be seeing a new plan within the next year. This is where I hope to see one cycle eliminated in favour of another.<\/p>\n

Strategic planning is a cycle in and of itself, and a very valuable one at that. A plan that analyzes all available data and includes a predictable cycle of review and renewal allows an organization to move forward, address their problems and issues, and ultimately become better than they are. In this way, our next five-year strategic plan, which is currently being developed, should direct us away from recurring concerns and keep us from second-guessing (or third-guessing?) organizational changes. To quote another popular book\/television series, our next strategic plan should help CRPA \u201cbreak the wheel.\u201d[1<\/a>]\n

Coincidentally, one of the projects I\u2019m working on this summer (as part of my \u201creal\u201d job) is a five-year strategic plan for the radiation safety department at the hospital where I work. It reminds me very much of the very first strategic planning exercise I went through, which happens to be the aforementioned 2014 to 2019 CRPA plan.<\/p>\n

I had just joined the board as a new director, which meant there was a lot of information to soak up. Fortunately, there were many other people on the board who had more experience in strategic planning, and I was able to learn a lot in that process.<\/p>\n

Fast-forward five years, and now I\u2019m making use of that volunteer experience and the lessons I learned to help me in my current work project. There is a cycle in gaining experience from volunteer work and applying it in one\u2019s professional (or at least, paid) career, and back again. This knowledge transfer is probably one of the most tangible benefits of volunteering with CRPA.<\/p>\n

So, I\u2019d encourage all of our members to get involved in the strategic planning process. The association stands to gain significantly from new and varied ideas, and those involved would acquire very marketable work experience. I myself plan to help out however I can. Although, to be fair, I think I should focus on meeting my editorial deadlines first . . . \u00a0\ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

J\u2019\u00e9cris ces lignes au d\u00e9but du mois d\u2019ao\u00fbt, soit un peu plus tard que ce que j\u2019avais pr\u00e9vu, ce qui est souvent le cas (et je m\u2019en excuse aupr\u00e8s de l\u2019\u00e9quipe de r\u00e9daction.)<\/p>\n

Je me rends compte que je prends encore plus de retard pendant l\u2019\u00e9t\u00e9. Je me promets vaguement de terminer le travail de l\u2019ACRP pendant les fins de semaine, puis ces promesses tendent \u00e0 s\u2019\u00e9vaporer lorsque ces fins de semaine arrivent enfin. C\u2019est un peu ironique, puisque je me trouve plus productif au travail pendant la semaine, lorsque tout le monde est en vacances.<\/p>\n

Alors, je fais de vagues promesses chaque ann\u00e9e\u2026 c\u2019est un cycle tr\u00e8s pr\u00e9visible qui me rappelle une version r\u00e9invent\u00e9e de Battlestar Galactica, <\/em>l\u2019une de mes t\u00e9l\u00e9s\u00e9ries pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9es. L\u2019\u00e9mission faisait souvent r\u00e9f\u00e9rence \u00e0 une \u00ab\u00a0r\u00e9p\u00e9tition \u00e9ternelle\u00a0\u00bb, lorsque les personnages disaient\u00a0: \u00ab\u00a0Tout cela s\u2019est d\u00e9j\u00e0 pass\u00e9 et tout cela se reproduira\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n

Bien que ce concept explique plut\u00f4t facilement mes ralentissements estivaux r\u00e9currents, il se manifeste aussi tr\u00e8s souvent dans d\u2019autres situations. Par exemple, je l\u2019observe lors de chaque assembl\u00e9e g\u00e9n\u00e9rale annuelle de l\u2019ACRP, et la derni\u00e8re r\u00e9union tenue \u00e0 Ottawa en mai n\u2019y faisait pas exception.<\/p>\n

En effet, chaque ann\u00e9e on nous pr\u00e9sente les m\u00eames pr\u00e9occupations quant au budget, au nombre d\u2019adh\u00e9rents, etc., sauf que cette ann\u00e9e, une motion a \u00e9t\u00e9 pr\u00e9sent\u00e9e pour qu\u2019on r\u00e9tablisse le poste de pr\u00e9sident sortant. Le conseil a fait cette proposition parce qu\u2019il estimait que ce poste serait b\u00e9n\u00e9fique \u00e0 ses t\u00e2ches.<\/p>\n

La motion a finalement \u00e9t\u00e9 adopt\u00e9e apr\u00e8s un d\u00e9bat quelque peu anim\u00e9. Cependant, m\u00eame cela faisait partie d\u2019un cycle, puisque le poste a \u00e9t\u00e9 supprim\u00e9 il y a cinq ans et que la proposition de le ramener n\u2019a \u00e9t\u00e9 adopt\u00e9e que sous condition d\u2019\u00eatre r\u00e9examin\u00e9e dans deux ans. Une d\u00e9cision d\u00e9finitive sera-t-elle prise \u00e0 ce moment-l\u00e0 ou est-ce que la discussion se reproduira \u00e0 nouveau?<\/p>\n

Peut-\u00eatre que le sort du pr\u00e9sident sortant sera plus facile \u00e0 pr\u00e9dire une fois que le nouveau plan strat\u00e9gique de l\u2019ACRP sera en place. Le plan actuel couvrait les ann\u00e9es\u00a02014 \u00e0 2019, ce qui signifie que nous devrions voir un nouveau plan au cours de l\u2019an prochain. C\u2019est l\u00e0 que j\u2019esp\u00e8re voir l\u2019\u00e9limination d\u2019un cycle au profit d\u2019un autre.<\/p>\n

La planification strat\u00e9gique est un cycle en soi et celui-ci est tr\u00e8s pr\u00e9cieux. Un plan qui analyse toutes les donn\u00e9es disponibles et qui inclut un cycle pr\u00e9visible de r\u00e9vision et de renouvellement permet \u00e0 une organisation d\u2019aller de l\u2019avant, de r\u00e9gler ses probl\u00e8mes et, ultimement, de s\u2019am\u00e9liorer. Ainsi, notre prochain plan strat\u00e9gique quinquennal, qui est en cours d\u2019\u00e9laboration, devrait nous \u00e9loigner des pr\u00e9occupations r\u00e9currentes et nous \u00e9viter de douter des changements organisationnels (ou de jouer aux devinettes). Pour citer une autre t\u00e9l\u00e9s\u00e9rie populaire, notre prochain plan strat\u00e9gique devrait aider l\u2019ACRP \u00e0 \u00ab briser la roue \u00bb.[1<\/a>]\n

Au m\u00eame moment, l\u2019un des projets sur lesquels je travaille cet \u00e9t\u00e9 (dans le cadre de mon \u00ab\u00a0vrai\u00a0\u00bb travail) est un plan strat\u00e9gique quinquennal pour le service de radioprotection de l\u2019h\u00f4pital qui m\u2019emploie. Cela me rappelle beaucoup le tout premier exercice de planification strat\u00e9gique auquel j\u2019ai particip\u00e9\u00a0: le plan\u00a02014-2019 de l\u2019ACRP mentionn\u00e9 ci-dessus.<\/p>\n

Je venais de me joindre au conseil \u00e0 titre de directeur, et j\u2019avais donc quantit\u00e9 de donn\u00e9es \u00e0 assimiler. Heureusement, plusieurs autres membres du conseil avaient beaucoup d\u2019exp\u00e9rience en planification strat\u00e9gique, ce qui m\u2019a permis d\u2019en apprendre \u00e9norm\u00e9ment au cours du processus.<\/p>\n

Aujourd\u2019hui, j\u2019applique cette exp\u00e9rience de b\u00e9n\u00e9volat, et les le\u00e7ons que j\u2019y ai apprises, \u00e0 mon actuel projet professionnel. C\u2019est qu\u2019il existe un cycle consistant \u00e0 acqu\u00e9rir de l\u2019exp\u00e9rience gr\u00e2ce au travail b\u00e9n\u00e9vole et \u00e0 l\u2019appliquer au cours de sa carri\u00e8re professionnelle (ou r\u00e9mun\u00e9r\u00e9e du moins), et vice versa. Ce transfert de connaissances est probablement l\u2019un des avantages les plus concrets du b\u00e9n\u00e9volat aupr\u00e8s de l\u2019ACRP.<\/p>\n

J\u2019encourage donc tous nos membres \u00e0 s\u2019impliquer dans le processus de planification strat\u00e9gique. L\u2019association a beaucoup \u00e0 gagner des id\u00e9es nouvelles et vari\u00e9es, et les personnes impliqu\u00e9es y gagneraient une exp\u00e9rience de travail appr\u00e9ciable. J\u2019ai moi-m\u00eame l\u2019intention d\u2019aider autant que je peux. Bien que, pour \u00eatre honn\u00eate, il me faudrait avant tout me concentrer sur le respect de mes \u00e9ch\u00e9ances d\u2019articles\u2026 \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n
