COVID-19 rapidly became a pandemic (declared by the World Health Organization on March 12, 2020).<\/p>\n<p>As radiation safety professionals, we have a responsibility to the public, workers, and the environment to protect against potentially harmful effects of exposure to ionizing and non-ionizing radiation. However, as safety professionals (in the broader sense), we simply have a duty to protect. CRPA is\u00a0 a professional safety association.<\/p>\n<p>We take the safety and security of our members, our families, and the public seriously. As such, the CRPA board of directors and the 2020 local organizing committee have made the difficult, yet necessary, decision to cancel this year\u2019s conference, which was supposed to be held in Winnipeg.<\/p>\n<p>The board wishes to acknowledge the hard work and dedication that the organizing committee in Winnipeg has put into what undoubtedly would have been an excellent conference. Thank you, one and all, for your efforts.<\/p>\n<p>At this point, no one knows how long this pandemic will last, how long protective measures will be needed, and how long the recovery phase will be (not to mention the backlog of work most CRPA members will be dealing with long after the pandemic has subsided). As such, we do not believe postponing the conference is an option.<\/p>\n<p>CRPA is not the only organization cancelling or postponing events:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The International Radiation Protection Association has postponed IRPA15 until January 2021.<\/li>\n<li>The Canadian Nuclear Society\u2019s annual conference has been cancelled.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The list goes on and on. CRPA is embodying our due diligence by cancelling a large gathering of people in these unsure times, and the board believes we are acting appropriately as concerned global citizens. While this is disappointing, we believe it is in the best interest of both the members and the general public.<\/p>\n<p>We will be issuing refunds to those who have already registered by whatever payment method was used to register.<\/p>\n<p>Despite this cancellation, the board is working on events to keep our members engaged in the association. In the coming weeks, we will be sharing information with you about online activities, such as participation in the annual general meeting, and other types of professional development. Stay tuned!<\/p>\n<p>Health Canada continues to recommend frequent handwashing, minimal touching, and social distancing as the best defence against COVID-19. To better understand what social distancing means, it might be easier to think of it as physical distancing. DO NOT emotionally distance yourself from others!<\/p>\n<p>There are many ways we can interact without being in the same physical spaces. Pick up the phone, send an email, write a letter, play games online, check out some of the many free courses and professional development online, learn a new language . . . The possibilities are endless.<\/p>\n<p>Remember, the CRPA board of directors is here to serve you. La COVID-19 est rapidement devenue une pand\u00e9mie (depuis le 12 mars 2020, tel que l\u2019a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 l\u2019Organisation mondiale de la sant\u00e9).<\/p>\n<p>\u00c0 titre de professionnels de la radioprotection, nous avons la responsabilit\u00e9 de prot\u00e9ger le public, les travailleurs et l\u2019environnement d\u2019une exposition \u00e0 des rayonnements ionisants et non ionisants potentiellement nocifs. Par contre, en tant que professionnels de la s\u00fbret\u00e9 (au sens large), nous avons le devoir de prot\u00e9ger. L\u2019ACRP est une association de professionnels de la s\u00fbret\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>Nous prenons au s\u00e9rieux la s\u00fbret\u00e9 et la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 de nos membres, de nos familles et du public. \u00c0 ce titre, le Conseil d\u2019administration de l\u2019ACRP et le Comit\u00e9 organisateur local ont pris la d\u00e9cision difficile, mais n\u00e9cessaire, d\u2019annuler le congr\u00e8s de cette ann\u00e9e, qui devait se tenir \u00e0 Winnipeg.<\/p>\n<p>Le conseil tient \u00e0 souligner le travail acharn\u00e9 et le d\u00e9vouement du comit\u00e9 organisateur de Winnipeg, qui pr\u00e9parait un congr\u00e8s qui s\u2019annon\u00e7ait excellent. Merci \u00e0 tous pour vos remarquables efforts.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c0 cette \u00e9tape-ci, personne ne sait combien de temps durera la pand\u00e9mie, combien de temps les mesures de protection seront n\u00e9cessaires, ni combien de temps durera la p\u00e9riode de r\u00e9tablissement (sans compter tout le retard que les membres de l\u2019ACRP auront \u00e0 combler pendant longtemps apr\u00e8s la fin de la pand\u00e9mie). Pour ces raisons, il nous semble pr\u00e9f\u00e9rable d\u2019annuler le congr\u00e8s plut\u00f4t que de le reporter.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019ACRP n\u2019est pas la seule organisation \u00e0 annuler ou \u00e0 reporter ses activit\u00e9s\u00a0:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>L\u2019Association internationale de radioprotection a report\u00e9 l\u2019IRPA15 jusqu\u2019en janvier 2021.<\/li>\n<li>La Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 nucl\u00e9aire canadienne a annul\u00e9 son congr\u00e8s annuel.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>La liste s\u2019allonge au fil du temps. L\u2019ACRP fait preuve de diligence raisonnable en annulant un grand rassemblement de personnes en ces temps incertains, et le conseil croit que nous agissons de mani\u00e8re appropri\u00e9e en tant que citoyens du monde concern\u00e9s. Bien qu\u2019elle soit d\u00e9cevante, nous croyons que cette d\u00e9cision est dans le meilleur int\u00e9r\u00eat des membres et du grand public.<\/p>\n<p>Nous rembourserons par le moyen de paiement utilis\u00e9 lors de l\u2019inscription ceux et celles qui s\u2019\u00e9taient d\u00e9j\u00e0 inscrits au congr\u00e8s.<\/p>\n<p>Malgr\u00e9 cette annulation, le conseil travaille sur d\u2019autres activit\u00e9s pour maintenir l\u2019engagement de nos membres envers l\u2019association. Dans les prochaines semaines, nous partagerons avec vous de l\u2019information \u00e0 propos d\u2019activit\u00e9s en ligne, comme la participation \u00e0 l\u2019assembl\u00e9e g\u00e9n\u00e9rale annuelle et \u00e0 d\u2019autres types de perfectionnement professionnel. Restez \u00e0 l\u2019aff\u00fbt!<\/p>\n<p>Sant\u00e9 Canada continue de recommander de se laver les mains fr\u00e9quemment, de minimiser les contacts et de pratiquer la distanciation sociale comme meilleurs moyens de protection contre la COVID-19. Afin de mieux comprendre ce que signifie la distanciation sociale, il peut \u00eatre plus facile de la consid\u00e9rer comme une forme de distanciation physique. Cependant, NE vous \u00e9loignez PAS \u00e9motionnellement des gens qui vous entourent!<\/p>\n<p>Il existe plusieurs fa\u00e7ons d\u2019interagir, m\u00eame sans occuper le m\u00eame espace physique. T\u00e9l\u00e9phoner \u00e0 quelqu\u2019un, envoyer un courriel, \u00e9crire une lettre, jouer en ligne, consulter les multiples formations gratuites ou de perfectionnement professionnel en ligne, apprendre une nouvelle langue, etc. Les possibilit\u00e9s sont infinies.<\/p>\n<p>Rappelez-vous que le Conseil d\u2019administration de l\u2019ACRP est l\u00e0 pour vous servir.
