I\u2019m not a scientist, but if you\u2019re reading this, chances are pretty good that you<\/em> are.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s also a pretty good likelihood that you\u2019re not crazy about writing or, at the very least, you\u2019re not very confident about your writing abilities. You\u2019re a scientist, after all, not a writer!<\/p>\n

And yet, clear and effective writing is an increasingly important skill in a science career. Like it or not, you have to write all the time\u2014proposals, reports, training material, presentations, even mundane email correspondence . . .<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, the education and training of scientists are often so overwhelmingly committed to\u00a0the technical aspects of science that the communication arts are neglected or ignored. In short, many good scientists are poor writers. Certainly, many scientists do not like to write.<\/p>\n

In his recent Bulletin<\/em> article, \u201cFear\u2014Why Radiation Safety Professionals Need to Address Public Fear with Understanding<\/a>,\u201d St\u00e9phane Jean-Fran\u00e7ois reminded us that \u201csound expertise and clear communication of facts are a good start to mitigate fear,\u201d but \u201ca simple misinterpretation of a fact by Joe or Jane Public replaces Bergoni\u00e9 and Tribondeau\u2019s law of cell radiosensitivity in less time than it takes to type 240 characters.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less.<\/p>\n

Clear and effective science writing, especially when you\u2019re trying to communicate beyond your peers to broader, non-scientist audiences can<\/p>\n
