I first became interested in radiation protection in 1985 when I was hired to label H-3 and C-14 fatty acids onto phospholipids for heart research. I was thrilled to see the science in action, but I felt a bit of trepidation that my work could harm me or the environment in some way that I didn\u2019t understand.<\/p>\n
I joined CRPA in 1990 (or 1991) after taking a job as the University of Manitoba\u2019s radiation safety technician responsible for radioactive waste and lab inspections.<\/p>\n
I poured over the early Bulletins like the Eaton\u2019s Christmas catalogue, There was so much to learn, and it was so fabulous that it was Canadian in content. It helped that one of the former board members (Irv Gusdal) was my supervisor and one (Danny Buksak) was our manager. Irv and Danny were huge CRPA supporters and conversed regularly about articles from the Bulletin.<\/p>\n
In 2007 (I think) I joined the CRPA Communications Committee and we were trying to figure out how to support CRPA communications across the vast territory that is Canada. I knew the previous Bulletin editor wanted to step down. I missed a teleconference meeting in August of 2007\u2014afterwards, I found out I had been selected to work on the Bulletin.<\/p>\n
I talked with Jeff Sandeman in at the annual conference in Saint John in September of that year. I agreed to be deputy editor as I am not a good writer. I agreed to move information from submission through translation (CRPA has an amazing volunteer translation resource!) to the publisher. I sent up a filing system and loved maintaining it.<\/p>\n
Although the editorial board was filled by the ardent work of ambitious recruiters, no one volunteered to be editor! Sunil Choubal had worked with the Board of Directors and he arranged for Michelle Boulton\u2019s company to produce the Bulletin. It was so amazing to see the transformation of the Bulletin. It is a favourite part for me to see how Michelle and her team arrange and layout the content submitted.<\/p>\n
My favourite early article was on radon from geological samples. It was submitted by Joseph Vincelli, CRPA(R) of McGill. The raw article was fascinating, but when Michelle and her team were done with it, I thought I was reading a Chatelaine magazine!<\/p>\n
Soon, I had help behind the scenes from a \u201csecret\u201d editor. I felt so much support from St\u00e9phane Jean-Fran\u00e7ois! He is a very intelligent, caring person who, fortunately for CRPA, cares strongly about the radiation protection in Canada.<\/p>\n
I agreed to become a part of the Bulletin Editorial Board because no one else was offering. I stayed for two reasons: Canadian radiation protection types needed a printed Bulletin to capture and communicate what was happening in radiation protection across Canada; and St\u00e9phane, Michelle, the Bulletin Editorial Board, and countless members of the Board of Directors made it easy to feel as though I was a part of a successful team doing important work.<\/p>\n
I hope the eBulletin will help CRPA jump forward to support younger radiation safety professionals to learn good practices, to stay safe, and to truly implement ALARA. I believe money and other resources should be efficiently used to keep people and the planet safe, not to fuel unsupported mythologies.<\/p>\n
There is much work to do and I look forward to keeping up with everything online. I think online communication is an invaluable platform in the Canadian environment, where vast distances separate those practising safe science.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n

Il y avait tant \u00e0 apprendre et c\u2019\u00e9tait fantastique de voir tout ce contenu canadien. Irv et Danny \u00e9taient de grands d\u00e9fenseurs de l\u2019ACRP et discutaient r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement d\u2019articles du Bulletin.<\/p>\n
Je suis devenue membre du Comit\u00e9 de communication de l\u2019ACRP en 2007, je crois, et nous essayions de trouver comment soutenir les communications partout dans le vaste territoire qu\u2019est le Canada. Je savais que l\u2019ancien r\u00e9dacteur en chef du Bulletin voulait d\u00e9missionner. J\u2019ai manqu\u00e9 une r\u00e9union par t\u00e9l\u00e9conf\u00e9rence en ao\u00fbt 2007 et apr\u00e8s, j\u2019ai d\u00e9couvert que j\u2019avais \u00e9t\u00e9 s\u00e9lectionn\u00e9e pour travailler sur le Bulletin.<\/p>\n
Cette ann\u00e9e-l\u00e0, en septembre, j\u2019ai parl\u00e9 avec Jeff Sandeman au congr\u00e8s annuel \u00e0 Saint John. J\u2019ai accept\u00e9 d\u2019\u00eatre r\u00e9dactrice adjointe puisque je ne suis pas dou\u00e9e pour l\u2019\u00e9criture. J\u2019ai accept\u00e9 de transmettre l\u2019information entre la soumission et la traduction (l\u2019ACRP compte une excellente \u00e9quipe de b\u00e9n\u00e9voles responsables de la traduction!), puis d\u2019amener le tout \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9diteur. J\u2019ai mont\u00e9 un syst\u00e8me de classement et j\u2019ai ador\u00e9 le tenir \u00e0 jour.<\/p>\n
M\u00eame si le Comit\u00e9 de r\u00e9daction \u00e9tait combl\u00e9 par le travail ardent de recruteurs dynamiques, personne ne se portait volontaire pour \u00eatre r\u00e9dacteur en chef! Sunil Choubal avait travaill\u00e9 avec le Conseil d\u2019administration et il a pris des dispositions pour que l\u2019entreprise de Michelle Boulton produise le Bulletin. C\u2019\u00e9tait fantastique de voir la transformation du Bulletin. Voir comment Michelle et son \u00e9quipe s\u2019occupent de l\u2019organisation et de la mise en pages du contenu est la partie que je pr\u00e9f\u00e8re.<\/p>\n
Mon article pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9 parmi les premiers portait sur le radon provenant d\u2019\u00e9chantillons g\u00e9ologiques. Il avait \u00e9t\u00e9 soumis par Joseph Vincelli, (A)ACRP de McGill. L\u2019article brut \u00e9tait fascinant, mais apr\u00e8s les interventions de Michelle et son \u00e9quipe, j\u2019ai cru que je lisais un magazine Ch\u00e2telaine!<\/p>\n
J\u2019ai rapidement obtenu l\u2019aide d\u2019un r\u00e9dacteur \u00ab\u00a0secret\u00a0\u00bb.\u00a0J\u2019ai senti tant de soutien de la part de St\u00e9phane Jean-Fran\u00e7ois ! C\u2019est une personne tr\u00e8s intelligente et g\u00e9n\u00e9reuse qui, heureusement pour l\u2019ACRP, se soucie grandement de la radioprotection au Canada.<\/p>\n
J\u2019ai accept\u00e9 de devenir membre du Comit\u00e9 de r\u00e9daction du Bulletin parce que personne d\u2019autre ne s\u2019\u00e9tait offert. Je suis rest\u00e9e pour deux raisons\u00a0: 1) les Canadiens qui se sp\u00e9cialisent en radioprotection avaient besoin d\u2019un bulletin imprim\u00e9 pour enregistrer et communiquer se qui se passait en mati\u00e8re de radioprotection au Canada et 2) St\u00e9phane, Michelle, le Comit\u00e9 de r\u00e9daction du Bulletin et un grand nombre de membres du Conseil d\u2019administration ont facilit\u00e9 mon entr\u00e9e en fonction et m\u2019ont fait sentir que je faisais partie d\u2019une \u00e9quipe gagnante accomplissant un travail important.<\/p>\n
J\u2019esp\u00e8re que le Bulletin \u00e9lectronique va aider l\u2019ACRP \u00e0 faire un bond en avant pour soutenir les jeunes professionnels de la radioprotection afin qu\u2019ils apprennent les bonnes pratiques, comme rester en s\u00e9curit\u00e9 et mettre r\u00e9ellement en \u0153uvre le principe ALARA. Je crois que l\u2019argent et d\u2019autres ressources doivent \u00eatre utilis\u00e9s efficacement pour garder les gens et la plan\u00e8te en s\u00e9curit\u00e9 afin de ne pas alimenter des mythologies d\u00e9nu\u00e9es de fondement.<\/p>\n
Il y a beaucoup \u00e0 faire et je me r\u00e9jouis \u00e0 l\u2019id\u00e9e de tout suivre en ligne. Je crois que la communication en ligne est une plateforme inestimable pour le Canada, o\u00f9 de vastes distances s\u00e9parent ceux qui pratiquent la science sans danger.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>
