International Cooperation Between CRPA and the China Society of Radiation Protection
In February of this year, the president of CRPA, Tara Hargreaves, and the executive vice president of the China Society of Radiation Protection (CSRP), Liu Qun, signed a renewed memorandum of understanding (MOU) to enhance international cooperation between sister societies of the International Radiation Protection Association (IRPA).
Under this renewed MOU, two CSRP members from the University of South China, Professor Detao Xiao and Professor Zhengzhong He, came all the way to Saskatoon and happily attended our joint CRPA-CARST conference in person. Both Professor Xiao and Professor He enjoyed the technical tours on May 27 very much.
At the conference, Professor Xiao gave a talk on a reference device for calibration of radon exhalation rate measuring instruments and its performance, and Professor He presented a rapid measurement method for the deposition velocity of thoron progeny based on an imaging plate. They carefully listened to all talks and discussions, and were very impressed by the relaxed and friendly academic atmosphere during the conference.
Another CSRP member, Professor Yuanyuan Liu from Beijing Normal University, delivered a pre-recorded address at the conference. The presentation was titled, In Vivo Measurement of Pb-210 Activity in Skull to Reconstruct Cumulative Radon Exposure by the TRACE Group, and was based on work carried out at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory (CJPL). This presentation caught the attention of Dimpal Chauhan, a scientist at SNOLAB in Sudbury, ON. After the conference, Professor Liu from CJPL and Chauhan from SNOLAB got to know each other and exchanged work, presentations, and related publications.
Under the MOU between CRPA and CSRP, I will attend this year’s CSRP annual conference in September, mainly to represent the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) and summarize recently published UNSCEAR reports. In addition, I will, for sure, showcase the great works accomplished by CRPA, the Canadian Association of Radon Scientists and Technologists, and Health Canada with a large and colourful poster.
Jin Chen
Jin ChenJing is an award-winning senior research scientist and the section head of the Radiological Impact Section at the Radiation Protection Bureau of Health Canada. Her expertise includes external and internal dosimetry and microdosimetry, radiation protection and management, radiation health risk assessment, and radiological impact on the environment.
Jing is a key player in Canada’s National Radon Program. She has worked on various expert groups and has been part of the Canadian delegation to the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) for numerous terms. She helped develop the Canadian drinking water and naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM) management guidelines, the Radioactivity Working Group of Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Program, and the Management of Radioactivity in Drinking Water (World Health Organization guidelines for drinking water quality).
Jing has been an active CRPA member since 2001 and has been promoting partnerships and collaborations between CRPA and international and national organizations for many years. CRPA has recognized her outstanding contributions by presenting her with the Distinguished Achievement Award, Founder’s Award, and an honorary Life Membership.
